Witness: Construction worker who died in fall drove scissor lift off 14th floor of building

Oklahoma City police identified a man who fell to his death Friday at a downtown Oklahoma City construction site.

The man was identified as Alex Mauricio Baiza, 33. Baiza fell from the 14th floor of the BOK Park Plaza Tower, 499 W Sheridan Ave., just before 11:30 a.m. Friday, police said.

A witness who also worked at the construction site told police Baiza was operating a scissor lift, a platform used to move workers vertically, at the time of the accident. The witness told police Baiza must have thought he had shifted the machine from the mode that moves it forward and backward to the mode that moves the platform up and down. When Baiza tried to go up in the lift, the machine moved forward, driving off the side of the building, the witness said.

Baiza grabbed onto some wires to try to pull himself from the lift, but he was tied to the machine by a cable. The witness said he tried to help Baiza, but couldn't reach him in time.
