Retail Chat: Crest coming to Market at Czech Hall
The Oklahoman's Brianna Bailey chatted with readers Thursday about Oklahoma City retail and other business stories. You can join Brianna's Q&A's at 10 a.m. the second Thursday of every month. Below is an abridged transcript of the chat.
Q: Any more news on new tenants moving into The Market at Czech Hall?
A: Crest Market is said to be the anchor grocery store for the development, but there hasn't been an official announcement.
Q: Any update of REI opening in Oklahoma City?
A: REI was supposed to be an anchor tenant in Washington Prime Group's expansion of the Triangle at Classen Curve, but Robyn Assaf's lawsuit over the development is holding things up. Assaf has appealed her case to the Oklahoma Supreme Court. Washington Prime is trying to get it dismissed.
A development in Tulsa that was also supposed to contain an REI store is also being held up by litigation. There is strong opposition from a group of residents on the development.
Q: Brianna, have there been any more developments on World Market coming to Edmond, Or really just news on any new retailers to that Bryant Square area?
A: I haven't heard anything more about Cost Plus (World Market) coming to Edmond. They may not have a lease signed yet, or the deal fell through.
Zoe's Kitchen, Five Guys Burgers and Fry's Ulta Beauty, and Torchy's Tacos are also new tenants coming to Bryant Square.
Q: I heard a long time ago that Toby Keith's Ice house was going to be an anchor tenant at a newly developed strip mall near MacArthur and Memorial just south of McDonald's. Any word if that was canceled or put on hold?
A: Toby Keith's Big Dog Daddy Ice House launched in 2014 and was betting on rapid expansion, but the concept wasn't developed very well and never went anywhere.
Most locations have closed. The Norman location on Lindsey at Berry Road has now rebranded as “Toby's American Grill” but I don't hear much about it. That being said, I'm guessing this is a bust.
Q: What are some of the new businesses coming to NW 23, mainly between Interstate 35 and Pennsylvania?
A: There's the new Natural Grocers that's going to finally start construction at the Gold Dome. It will be exciting to see what they do with the space. Also, there's a new Jimmy John's sandwich place coming to NW 23 at Barnes Avenue. It's a vacant lot right now.
Q: I was wondering if you could tell me why ground-floor retail in the central business district never really took off until now. I recently moved to Seattle and its hard to find an office building downtown (or anywhere in the city) that doesn't include first-floor retail.
A: Downtown Oklahoma City is still pretty dead on nights and weekends, although it's come a long way in the last few years. The central business district is mostly still office buildings that clear out on the weekends. It's hard to make a go of it as a retailer because of this.
