The Oklahoman’s premium app and website get summer upgrades
August was a month of upgrades for The Oklahoman’s digital products.
If you are a digital news consumer, your subscription to The Oklahoman gives you so much more than non-subscribers.
I am proud of the news experiences our developers have put together for our subscribers over the past few years, and the new upgrades are significant improvements on what was already a robust digital experience.
Mobile & Tablet application
We’ve been improving The Oklahoman’s iOS application for iPads and iPhones. We launched a new release of the app. The Oklahoman’s app includes all the stories from the daily edition of the newspaper, plus all the videos and multimedia associated with those articles.
Editors also put together extra sections with stories from around the world, both for news sections and for sports sections. And when there is breaking news or live coverage updates, those headlines will appear at the top of every page on the app.
All that, along with the app’s Inbox alerts based on the topics you choose, means that you will never miss anything important in our community or our world.
Plus, this app will read the stories to you. Just select the audio icon at the top of every article and listen to the story as you multi-task.
The app now has a full video page, with all the video interviews and the live videos from The Oklahoman’s downtown studio. The app also includes a photo gallery page with images from around the world and from The Oklahoman’s photographers.
If you are serious about news, The Oklahoman is the only app you need to keep up with everything going on in Oklahoma and beyond.
This week, we launched another major product for subscribers.
Oklahoman.com is new. It has many of the same features as the application – articles, videos, extra sections, breaking news, photo galleries and read-to-me audio.
But the best addition on the website can be found on the right side of the home page on your computer. Check out the notifications on at the top right of the masthead. We’ll deliver breaking news and other updates from The Oklahoman’s newsroom. Just click the Settings button to customize the types of updates you are getting. You can select from a variety of topics. We’ll save your settings on that browser for you, so it’s always saved when you come back to the website.
These are called desktop notifications. They are brand new. There are some other websites that have this functionality. But I know of no other sites that allow you to customize exactly what you’re going to receive in your desktop notifications.
And more …
Our mission of giving subscribers the best premium news experience isn’t quite over. There’s still more to come.
For example, we plan to improve access to the popular Print Replica on mobile screens. We also plan to roll out a new Android mobile application this fall.
They all work together seamlessly with just one login. Your subscriber login works on all these products, and on all the products still to come.
