NICHOLS HILLS — Trader Joe's iconic red sign is now up at Nichols Hills Plaza, and the small city is eagerly anticipating a bump in sales tax revenue when the new store opens in September.

While the grocer has yet to announce an official opening date, Trader Joe's is tentatively set to open Sept. 23, Nichols Hills Mayor Steven Goetzinger said.

Nichols Hills has seen a dramatic decline in sales tax revenue since the city's only grocer, the Crescent Market, closed its doors in Nichols Hills Plaza in 2011, Goetzinger said. The nearby Whole Foods Market is in Oklahoma City.

"This is going to be a turning point for Nichols Hills,” he said. “We've struggled for so many years because of a lack of sales tax revenues and this is going to turn it around for us. We're excited.”

Money that Nichols Hills receives from the state as its portion of sales tax collections goes to pay firefighters, police and other city employees.

Jim Parrack, vice president for local real estate firm Price Edwards & Co., predicted in the firm's midyear retail report that Nichols Hills Plaza owner WP Glimcher will bring a number of national and regional tenants to both Nichols Hills Plaza and the nearby Classen Curve shopping center.

One of a kind

Although a measure on November's ballot that, if approved, would allow wine sales in grocery stores could help lure new grocers to the market, people shouldn't expect a proliferation of Trader Joe's stores across Oklahoma any time soon, Parrack said.

“I'd like to see Trader Joe's open more than one store, or many stores here, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen any time soon,” he said.
