YMCA Camp Classen celebrates its 75th anniversary

Three summers ago I went back to summer camp. Davis, Oklahoma. The Arbuckles. Take the Fried Pies exit and turn right. It was 2014 and my crew was headed to the YMCA Camp Classen campgrounds halfway between Oklahoma City and Dallas.

You can see the result of that trip in the below video. Today, Scott Hall, executive director of YMCA Camp Classen, stopped by The Oklahoman's downtown studio to talk about 75 years of summer camp and to remind parents and kids that registration is still available.

Looking back through the camp's history, thanks to Steve Lackmeyer's and Jack Money's excellent book, "Cornerstone, The YMCA Of Greater Oklahoma City," I was reminded that many of Oklahoma City's civic leaders were involved in building and sustaining the camp. They saw the need to provide kids with physical, social and educational activities.
