Oklahoma City boxing coach recalls brush with ‘The Greatest’

Waiting in the Los Angeles airport in 1994 for a flight to a bout in China, boxing coach Billy Smith got his up-close brush with “The Greatest.”

Twenty-two years later, the 74-year-old Oklahoma City resident's eyes still glitter when he recalls the brief encounter with Muhammad Ali, the three-time world heavyweight champion, who was laid to rest Friday in Louisville, Ky.

Smith and his boxer, Mike Sedillo, were headed to Asia for a light heavyweight title fight. Sedillo, who knew Ali from a training camp, introduced him to Smith. The men exchanged jabbing techniques and discussed life.

“He was punching my hands real fast, boy, just fast as lightning, a lot of power,” Smith said earlier this week as he watched fighters train in a northwest Oklahoma City gym. His thin, white mustache slanted as he smiled at the memory.

Still, at just 52, Ali already was showing a slight tremble in his hands from the Parkinson's disease with which he'd been diagnosed a decade earlier, Smith said.

Before Smith realized, a crowd of more than 100 had gathered to watch, before Ali's handlers whisked him away.

Moments later, one of Ali's representatives approached Smith

“He always does that,'' she told him about the champ. “Anywhere he is, people are drawn to him.”

Dreams denied

Smith grew up with his own dreams of being a champion.

Born in Altus, the family moved to California where Smith began boxing at age 15 at a Sacramento YMCA. His promising amateur career soon moved him to Los Angeles, but a back injury derailed his ring dreams.

Smith then helped out his former trainers and not long after had a stable of his own fighters. He relocated to San Bernadino and, with a reputation for a special ability to teach defense, his roster of professionals grew.

Things were going well for Smith. He was training great fighters, contending for titles and gaining recognition. Then, came the accident.

In 2004, his son Casey Smith, then just 22, stopped to help at a crash scene only to be struck by another car. Casey, lost a leg and suffered a brain injury.

“We almost lost him,” Smith said with lingering disbelief still holding his voice.

Smith and his wife moved back to Oklahoma City in 2006 so that their son could be treated at the Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation Center.

“He was going to be my champion,” Smith said, glancing toward his son, who'd had his own promising amateur career, but now sat nearby in a wheelchair.

Profound respect

These days, Smith often can be found at Western Avenue Boxing Gym, 4408 N Western Ave., where he's back in the game of training professional and amateur fighters.

The gym is owned by Travis and Rebecca Hoffman, of Oklahoma City, who Smith met while attending a fight with his son at Remington Park in 2008.

Travis had been training Rebecca, a professional boxer, until they'd started dating. He'd been looking for a replacement trainer when he met Smith, who seemed a perfect match. That year, Rebecca became his first fighter in Oklahoma. Her record stands at three wins, one draw and one loss.

Rebecca, 36, recalled her first time working out under Smith and his “old-fashioned” training methods.

“He arrived with a rolled-up newspaper,” she laughed, remembering the scene. “I was like, ‘Are you going to hit me with that?' And Billy was like ‘Yup.' ”

The couple's mom-and-pop-style gym sits at the end of a nondescript strip mall. A small, barely visible metal sign bearing the gym's name sits below the storefront window. Inside, the air is warm and the smell of rubber and sweat linger.

“Shah, shhh, pop, pop. Shah, shhh, pop, pop”

The sounds of heavy breathing and flashing punches intertwine, becoming louder and louder.

On surrounding white walls, where the paint is chipping in places, are mounted photographs of fighters in the ring. Many of the images include Smith, often standing with a winning boxer. One such photo shows Smith with a victorious Daniel Tran, a whippet-thin lightweight with a large chest tattoo who is pointing a celebratory finger at his beloved trainer.

“I learn something new everyday,” Tran said, his voice dripping with respect for Smith.

Smith's quiet authority can hold the gym. As he walks around the small room dominated by the ring in the center, he smiles and nods as his boxers look to him for reassurance. His pace is slow, his gaze can linger, almost as if lost in a moment.

When he gets into the ring, hands up, everyone watches, hoping to capture his expertise with a glance. He studies his boxers' hands with laserlike precision. As he offers his own hands as targets, he whispers “right here, right here.”

His students' adoration for him can be seen in they way they joke around with him, cling to his every subtle remark.

“It makes you strive to be that much better because you want to be one of the best fighters he's trained,” said Mistery Neal, a 25-year-old bantamweight. Neal, one of Smith's professional fighters, began boxing when her college soccer career ended. Smith took her under his wing.

“Billy has impacted not just my career but my life,” Neal said. “You always hear him in your ear, ‘Keep going, keep going.'”

A link

On the China trip, Smith learned a lesson from the champ that has stuck with him all these years.

While there, he got a chance to time one of Ali's training runs and found that he ran 46 minutes without stopping. Smith said it was then that he realized that Ali's self-stated ability to “float like a butterfly,” came from his stamina, stamina that other heavyweights lacked.

Back home, Smith took his cue from Ali, and began to time his fighters' runs. Those who couldn't do long distance needed to be in better shape. That teaching tip remains his link to a legend.

“You've always got guys come in and they wanted to imitate Muhammad Ali,'' Smith said. “Well, that's the worst thing you'll ever do. You ain't going to be like him.”

Ali's greatness, Smith said, can be attributed to his mentality, one of confidence and individualism.

“Every fighter has a different style," Smith said. “You've got your style, and you stay with that.”
