Outgoing Fort Sill commander to head up Army missile defense command

LAWTON — The outgoing commanding general at Fort Sill and the Fires Center of Excellence will head up the U.S. Army's missile defense command, Fort Sill officials announced Friday.

Maj. Gen. John Rossi was appointed commanding general of the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command at Redstone Arsenal, Ala. Along with that appointment, Rossi has been nominated for promotion to the rank of lieutenant general. That promotion must be approved by the U.S. Senate.

Rossi has been commander at Fort Sill since June 2014. Earlier this year, post officials announced Maj. Gen. Brian J. McKiernan, commanding general of the First Army Division East, had been selected to be the post's new commanding general. A change of command ceremony is scheduled for July 21.
