Oklahoma population nears 4 million mark

WASHINGTON _ Oklahoma's population moved closer to 4 million this year, reaching 3,911,388, according to Census Bureau estimates released on Tuesday.

The state gained an estimated 87 people a day from July 2014 to July 2015 for a total of 31,778.

That is close to the average annual growth since the last official headcount in 2010. Since that year's census, Oklahoma has gained 159,987 residents, the Census Bureau estimates.

If Oklahoma remains on that pace, state population would top 4 million in three years.

The Census Bureau reported that seven states lost population from 2014 to 2015; that Florida crossed the 20 million threshold, only the third state to do so; and North Carolina crossed the 10 million mark, only the ninth state with that many people or more.

Note: An  earlier version of this story misstated the percentage growth of Oklahoma's population between 2014 and 2015.
