Watch a Boeing 707 do a barrel roll at 490 mph

As a commercial aviation geek I'm always interested in what kind of plane I'm flying on whenever I take to the friendly skies. Most of the time it's a 737 or something similar.

But way back in the 1980's my dad decided to take the family on a week-long vacation to Jamaica. He booked it through some charter outfit and we flew down there on a Boeing 707 and when I found that out, I spent a lot of time doing some research on a plane that even then was outdated.

For the uninitiated the 707 is basically the grandfather of modern commercial jet aviation. It was one of the most mass produced aircraft of its time and there are even some still flying today.

I thought I knew everything that was relevant about the 707, but not quite. Apparently back in the 1950s one of its test pilots decided it might be fun to a do a barrel roll in a commercial airliner. Even better, someone was filming it and the event is preserved here for all to see.

It's grainy, but amazing all the same.
