Former OKC RedHawk sets minor league HR record
Mike Hessman of the Toledo Mud Hens hit his 433rd career home run in the minor leagues Monday night, making the former Oklahoma City RedHawk the Barry Bonds of the minor leagues, presumably minus the steroids.
Hessman hit 35 of those home runs in 2012 while playing with the RedHawks. I did a feature on Hessman that year, which you can read here.
Hessman seemed like a good guy but downplayed any quest for the minor league home run record like Crash Davis sought in the movie, Bull Durham.
In fact, when Hessman found out I also covered outdoors, he was more interested in talking about hunting, fishing and shooting. He started quizzing me about places he could go shoot in Oklahoma City.
