From the judge's mouth: You are a lucky reader of The Oklahoman/NewsOK

It's been a busy year around here.

We moved offices. We're downtown, if you haven't heard.

We lit up a Big Screen at Robinson and Sheridan. We participated in a nice proposal.

We covered some big news, gaining big audience and readership for our coverage of the SAE racist video controversy in March, our Oklahoma City Thunder coverage and OKC bombing anniversary coverage in April and our weather coverage this past week.

And while we've been doing that, we pulled in some awards. We mentioned these awards as they came in, but the days go by so fast that it's hard to remember everything that happened.

We do so many things every day here in the newsroom that we sometimes only recall the stories we wished we had more time to tell.

Sometimes, you have to take a deep breath and just be reminded of what your colleagues have accomplished. So bear with me:

  • The Oklahoman sports department won its second consecutive grand slam award in February. It's an honor given by the APSE (Associated Press Sports Editors) and it's a big accomplishment. Just look up the others that are in our class. We're right there with the biggest sports brands in the world.
  • The Great Plains Journalism Awards were good to us, as well. Multiple individuals in our newsroom won first-place honors for all types of different reporting, investigative and multimedia projects. It was a big haul that day.
  • The Oklahoman had similar success in the Associated Press/Oklahoma News Editors awards a little more than a week ago. There were several first-place winners - too many to name in my short column. And The Oklahoman won the General Excellence award for both the newspaper and the website.

The judges for the AP-ONE awards are impartial and come from another state. They have no reason to love us.

I just had to share a portion of the comments from one of the judges speaking of The Oklahoman:

"It opens a window to the world, and an even bigger window to its home state and metro community. We can only wish that all of our major American newspapers were trying this hard."

Now, back to work.
