Research is part of the travel experience
For me, one of the best parts about travel is researching different places I’d like to visit.
Travel is often expensive, so it’s good to know as much about a place before you decide to get out the credit card and book the airfare.
Rick Steves is one of the best. His website is loaded with information and most of his PBS shows are available on his YouTube channel for free. The Metropolitan Library System has many of his guidebooks on its shelves.
I also enjoy Rudy Maxa’s PBS show and Samantha Brown, when the Travel Channel used to be about travel rather than whatever it has morphed into now.
But outside of the big brand names in travel there are guys like Mark Wolters who runs www.woltersworld.com along with a YouTube channel.
The format for his YouTube videos is generally “5 things you’ll love about London and 5 things you’ll hate about London”, for example.
His opinions are frank, and in my experience, generally right on, and above all, the infromation provided is useful. He’s been just about everywhere in Europe and many places in Asia. While he may not be as well known as Steves or Maxa, his insight is presented in an informal way that’s fun to watch.
