The Oklahoman's movie review of 'American Sniper' goes global
'American Sniper' became a hot topic on the Internet this past week.
A lot of it was political, to be sure. That's to be expected. It's a movie about war. Since just about every topic on the Internet becomes political, a movie about war is bound to become political, as well.
But a good portion of the conversation this week centered on what in the movie was real and what was not real - namely, the now infamous fake baby.
I first heard about the fake baby when I read the review in The Oklahoman more than a week ago. Brandy McDonnell reviewed the movie for us, and it caught my attention because it was the first negative reaction I had heard about the movie to that point.
To quote Brandy (since everyone else has):
“Cooper and Miller deliver the performance of their careers during an argument over what’s supposed to be their infant daughter, but instead end up cradling a jarringly fake plastic baby and trying to pretend it’s the real thing. There’s just no excuse for that kind of bush-league nonsense.”
Brandy's review was one of our top-viewed stories on the site and from Facebook referrals over last weekend. Interest in the review increased through the week as the #fakebaby sensation continued through the world.
Brandy was quoted on multiple sites across the planet:
It was interesting to see how a story can go viral. Write something interesting. Back it up with logic. Allow the audience to share. Let the world decide.
Not everyone agrees with Brandy's review. Actually, if you follow these things, you probably noticed the inevitable swing of public sentiment about the fake baby not being a big deal at all. In some reaction I’ve seen, even the fake baby has become a political statement.
But riding the wave of social media sentiment isn’t Brandy’s job. Her job is simple: provide an objective and honest insight about what she reviews and let the rest of the world decide with their choices.
In this case, Brandy made the opening statement for last week’s worldwide movie trial of the fake baby.
