U.S. Supreme Court to decide same-sex marriage issue

The U.S. Supreme Court agreed Friday to determine whether state bans on same-sex marriage violate 14th amendment protections.

The court will decide _ probably this summer _ whether states must grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples and recognize same-sex marriages from out of state.

The court consolidated appeals from Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee.

In October, the high court declined to hear same-sex marriage cases from Oklahoma, Utah and Virginia. In those cases, federal courts had struck down state laws, and the high court’s inaction meant the marriages could occur.

If the Supreme Court ultimately decides that states have the right to ban same-sex marriages, the state ban might again go into effect. It is not clear what would happen then to the same-sex marriages that have occurred .
