HS football: A little something to restore your faith in humanity

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of writing about Team Roberts.

It was the story of Crossings Christian linebacker Christian Osterhout and how he became part of coach Chris Roberts’ family after both of his parents died within a couple years of each other. Their story was so inspiring that the NFL named it one of six national finalists in the “Together We Make Football” contest.

A week or so after the story ran, I received a letter that made me smile almost as much as Team Roberts. I’ve attached a picture of the letter above, but it might be hard to see, so here’s what it said:

Dear Ms. Carlson,

Just thinking that Christian could use some extra cash in case he wanted to buy his stepparents a Christmas gift. I could not find an address for Christian or his school. Please forward to him. Many thanks. Great story.

Sincerely, Carl and Vicki Hutto

Then on the back was a little note especially for Christian.

Sorry you all lost, but wow, what a season you had.

Included with the notes from Carl and Vicki was a check for Christian.

The kindness of strangers is unbelievably humbling. Carl and Vicki indicated that they live in Weatherford, so think about what had to happen here. A paper had to make its way to their doorstep about 70 miles away from our office. They had to take the time to read about Team Roberts. Then, they had to decide to that they wanted to do something, had to sit down and hand write the note (which in and of itself is something of a novelty these days), then had to get everything in the mail.

What a wonderful act of generosity.

I actually received their envelope while in the midst of the Douglass-Locust Grove saga. With lots of ugliness being thrown around, their note was like an oasis, a reminder that people have lots of goodness in their hearts.

So, Carl and Vicki, I’m honored to pass along the letter and the check to Christian, but just so you know, you gave something to me when you sent that, too. Something invaluable.
