Rep. Markwayne Mullin fixes campaign report glitch

Freshman Rep. Markwayne Mullin filed an amended campaign finance report Thursday afternoon after a software glitch led many of the contribution and expenditure numbers to be erroneously inflated.

A report filed by Mullin’s campaign on Wednesday, covering the period from July 1 through September 30, showed donations that were well above the legal limit. It also reflected aggregate contribution and spending amounts that made no sense given the numbers reported earlier this year.

What happened, according to campaign manager Mike Stopp, is that the campaign finance software was combining the numbers from Mullin’s first campaign, which ended in 2012, with the currrent campaign.

That made it appear that Mullin had raised $3.3 million in the current cycle, rather than $1.2 million.

U.S. House campaign cycles are two years long.

The same software glitch added the individual contributions from the 2012 campaign to the 2014 campaign, making it appear that donors had given above the legal limits, according to Mullin’s campaign manager.
