Mack Brown says he made mistake with Will Muschamp 'coach in waiting' suggestion
Former Texas coach Mack Brown is the subject of Sunday's "Collected Wisdom" feature in The Oklahoman. In a broad-ranging interview, he was asked about times when he had the most fun and the least fun in his 16 years as the Longhorn head coach.
Brown admitted that the decision to name then-defensive coordinator Will Muschamp as the coach-in-waiting in 2008 led to some of his roughest times.
"I made a mistake with the administration here when I suggested we put Will Muschamp as the coach in waiting," Brown said, making public a sentiment that has long been known privately in Austin. "That sent a message to people that I was ready to get out of coaching, and that wasn't why we did it. We did it to pay him more to keep him because we thought we had a chance to win the national championship.
"Since that time, it wasn't as much fun because there was a thought, an underlying thought, that I was wanting to get out of coaching because of the move that I made."
