Remodeling Set for 16th Street Plaza Shopping Center

Steve Mason isn’t wasting much time improving the Plaza Shopping Center he recently purchased along NW 16th just east of Indiana Avenue. As I reported in May, the building is the largest in the district – 27,000 square feet. Steve reports he is remodeling the 9,500-square-foot space that until recently was home to a discount dollar store.
One of the new storefronts will be home to a variety shop, Mason says, while he is talking to two prospective tenants for the remaining two spaces.
Remodeling continues, meanwhile, on the old Haggard’s furniture building across the street, where Oak & Ore recently posted a photo on social media showing progress underway.

These developments, along with the recent opening of Cheltepe’s (which is getting rave reviews), heralds a transition for the Plaza District. It is, without a doubt, one of the city’s leading urban entertainment and arts districts, and I fully expect it to trigger a wave of redevelopment through nearby depressed neighborhoods.
This, my friends, is what an urban renaissance looks like.
