NewsOK growing gram by (Insta)gram

I’m on Instagram. Admittedly, I don’t use that social media platform nearly as much as Facebook or Twitter, but I’m there.

And I’m about to commit to more activity.

Why? Well, that’s where some of my NewsOK web editors are. And if that’s where they are, that’s where many wise young professionals are.

But that’s not all. I have real data and experience that tell me I should spend more time on Instagram.

The NewsOK Instagram account (@News_OK) has grown fast over the past year. We launched the account about a year ago and then launched a #MyOklahoma promotion on Instagram and in the newspaper. We feature a photo with that hashtag every day in The Oklahoman.

I knew that series was a success when about a month later, one of The Oklahoman’s editors — one who admits to being behind in social media knowledge — walked into my office and said …

This is the best (darn) thing we started in the paper this year!

I wisely reminded my colleague that it was our editor Kelly Dyer Fry’s idea that was put into practice by social media star and web editor Tiffany Gibson.

Gibson told me this week that we’ve had more than 12,000 submissions in the last year. We plan to keep the #MyOklahoma feature.

We also consider the #OKCSelfie contest a success. We launched that feature earlier this year to promote the Outlook 2014 section.
