Meet the No. 1 reader for The Oklahoman and NewsOK

She reads The Oklahoman every day.

Every day. Never misses a day.

When I visit, it’s there on the coffee table. Every time. And it’s not neatly stacked; the sections are pulled out and often wrinkled with usage.
She actually can’t imagine life without the newspaper. Reading the newspaper each day is a lifestyle she’s become accustomed to in every city and community she’s lived in.

But she’s not old-fashioned. Her reliance on the daily newspaper as a foundation for involvement in and information about a community is not an indication of an aversion to technology.

She also has an iPad. She even has The Oklahoman’s two iPad apps – the print replica app and the custom app – on her iPad. Sometimes, she reads the newspaper on the iPad, but generally she prefers to hold a printed product.

But on the iMac in her home office … that’s another story. The browser on the iMac spends a lot of time on That’s where the breaking news is, you know – well, she knows.

She likes the updates and blog posts she can find on NewsOK’s home page. She likes how she can find new stories throughout the day and into the evening. It’s always changing.

Plus, she can comment on stories and sometimes scold commenters that have taken their opinions too far. And she can share stories – yes, she loves to share stories on her social media account or email them to her friends and colleagues.

And then, the other day, she mentioned in passing that she appreciated Melba running her letter.

“How do you know Melba?” I asked.

Well, Melba’s in the newspaper every week, silly.

She wanted to give away some items for crafts and thought some group might need them. She knows Melba’s Swap Shop can help.

I opened up my iPad and went to the Print Replica app for that day’s newspaper. I found the Life section, swiped a couple of pages and there was Melba’s column. And there was the offer to give away craft supplies.

Appearing in Melba’s Swap Shop column was the final straw for me. On the spot, I declared this woman the world’s “No. 1 customer for OPUBCO Communications Group and its suite of products.”

Congratulations to Linda Stark for the imaginary honor I gave her the other day. The unofficial distinction of ‘The Oklahoman’s No. 1 customer’ will precede her name in future introductions.

Previously, I just introduced her as ‘my favorite mother-in-law.’
