Chat transcript: Outdoors Editor Ed Godfrey at H&H Shooting Sports

NewsOK Sports 11:24 a.m. My guest today for the chat is Kim Lopez, who is head of the law enforcement sales division for the H&H Shooting Sports Complex. She primarily deals with law enforcement agencies but is very knowledgeable about firearms. You can send in your questions now. We will be starting at 11:30 a.m.
NewsOK Sports 11:32 a.m. Kim is now here so let's get going.
Matt P. 11:33 a.m. What is your expertise? i.e. pistol, carbine, etc.
NewsOK Sports 11:34 a.m. KIm: I am here to bring law enforcement distributor programs to law enforcement for the firearms you are talking about, so that agencies can get them directly from vendors.
Mike M. 11:34 a.m. What caliber is preferred? 9MM, 40 S&W, 45acp, etc.?
NewsOK Sports 11:35 a.m. Kim: I see law enforcement buying all of those but most predominantly .40 caliber.
John R. 11:35 a.m. Does H&H offer any basic and advanced courses a person could attend beyond the Conceal Carry class? If so, cost of the course?
NewsOK Sports 11:36 a.m. Kim: We do have personalized one-hour individualized training. The cost is $35 an hour, I believe.
Richard H. 11:37 a.m. Is there a preferred course method of using a firearm? For instance, weapon light attached, weapon in one hand & light in the other hand, lasers, etc.
NewsOK Sports 11:37 a.m. Kim: This varies from agency to agency. CLEET training includes strong arm and support arm firearms training.
George H. 11:37 a.m. What are some of the firearms you would recommend?
NewsOK Sports 11:38 a.m. KIm: Smith and Wesson and Remington. These are dependable and cost-effective.
Randy C. 11:38 a.m. Do you recommend a particular brand of ammunition?
NewsOK Sports 11:40 a.m. Kim: This varies by need, a good defense ammunition for less collateral damage I would recommend Hornady and Remington for a sound, cost-effective range round.
Bill M. 11:40 a.m. What accessories does she feel would be very beneficial to have?
NewsOK Sports 11:43 a.m. Kim: I love this question. For law enforcement, our Hutton's Edge fixed-blade and for civilian our Stiky holster and our Gun Totin' Momma handbags with concealable holster. They are fashion friendly, accessible from both sides and this company will replace the handbag should you have to shoot through that handbag if you have to protect yourself.
Tim C 11:43 a.m. I'm considering the purchase of a STOEGER COUGAR semi-auto. What do you know about the quality of that pistol/company? I know the company is owned by Beretta.
NewsOK Sports 11:45 a.m. Kim: Buying a firearm is a very personal choice. I compare it to buying a good pair of boots. You just have to the right fit. It's important we all find the right fit.
Ben S. 11:49 a.m. Why does H&H not stock a great deal of bonded law enforcement ammo?
NewsOK Sports 11:50 a.m. Kim: Because it is more cost effective for agencies to utilize our law enforcement distributorship agreements, and have that ammunition delivered direct to our headquarters from respective vendors..
Clay B. 11:50 a.m. How did you become involved in this particular type of sales area?
NewsOK Sports 11:52 a.m. Kim: I was deputy sheriff for 27 years and I got a call from Capt. Bob Bowman of OCPD, who recruited me to this position.
Jerry W. 11:52 a.m. What is your individual officer discount?
NewsOK Sports 11:54 a.m. Kim: I am very proud that we do not offer any individual officer discount. We are the largest store in the United States and our markup does not allow for any discount. We deal in volume so we don't have much markup. I am proud that we keep our markup to a minimum.
Greg P. 11:54 a.m. Why is it cheaper for my department to buy ammunition than it is for me?
NewsOK Sports 11:55 a.m. Kim: This question is asked a lot by officers. It is cheaper for your departments to purchase ammunition and firearms through our agreements because it eliminates retail markup. It is paid for by tax exempt municipal, state or county funding.
Henry J. 11:56 a.m. What's the wait for law enforcement department ammo?
NewsOK Sports 11:57 a.m. Kim: All of our vendors are experiencing morbid demand. They have far more demand for ammo then they can produce. Although this varies by vendor, typically it is between 120 and 180 days minimum.
NewsOK Sports 11:57 a.m. Last call for questions for Kim before we conclude
NewsOK Sports 12:02 p.m. Kim: Before we sign off, I would like to hear from law enforcement officers as to which products they would like for me to inquire about at the SHOT Show in Las Vegas next week. Feel free to email me at
NewsOK Sports 12:02 p.m. That ends our chat for today. We will have another one the first Friday in February from H&H.
