MAPS Turns 20 -- NewsOK has a page for it

Subscribers to The Oklahoman got something extra in the newspaper last Sunday.

December marks the 20th anniversary of the original MAPS vote. It happened on Dec. 14, 1993. I remember the vote well. It was my first year in the Oklahoma City metro area. I was a sophomore at the University of Oklahoma.

And since I decided to make my home in the greater Oklahoma City area, I’m grateful for the investment made by the community.

But I don’t remember the vote as well as Steve Lackmeyer. Steve has been covering the growth of Oklahoma City since that day. He’s covered the ballpark, the arena, the canal, the river, the civic center and the continued development.

I had the pleasure of watching Steve help organize the special MAPS: 20 Years Later section under the direction Business Editor Don Mecoy. Steve knows the history. He actually seems to remember every day, every vote and every argument — for and against.

I hope you had the chance to flip through the special section that was in Sunday’s newspaper as you thawed out from last week’s snow. But in case you didn’t (and even if you did, really), you should visit NewsOK’s MAPS: 20 Years Later page.

Art Director Todd Pendleton worked with Lackmeyer and Mecoy to put together a great interactive map that helps visually tell the full story of MAPS. Plus, we have all the stories organized by the Past, Present and Future of MAPS.

And we have this excellent historical video with the memories of a lot of the major players from the last 20 years.

Check out the interactive piece, the photo gallery of past front pages of The Oklahoman, the video and all the stories.

With our help, you might someday know as much about the past 20 years as Steve Lackmeyer.
