5 reasons why cookies are the best dessert

Let’s be real here: Cookies are awesome. I got to thinking about just how great they are after I saw Hiland Dairy, The Oklahoman and NewsOK have teamed up to present the 12 Days of Cookies, where users can submit their favorite cookie recipes.

Every time my parents and I visited our family for the holidays, my grandmother would have fresh-baked cookies waiting for us.

Now, this woman knows how to bake a cookie. She’s been baking them for years for her church, and her peanut butter cookies are legendary. Heck, I even called her Grandma Cookie when I was a child, that’s how much I associate this woman with cookies (and, of course, love).

I then realized something that should be obvious to everyone: Cookies are the best dessert.

Some of you might have gasped at that notion, but hear me out.

5. The symmetry

The circle is a beautiful shape, and when a cookie is perfectly round, we can’t help but be drawn to it. It’s part of the reason why Oreos are the world’s best-selling cookies.

4. It’s science, man!

The human tongue has four major taste sensations: Bitter, sour, salty and sweet. The bitter and sour areas are at the back of the tongue, because we tend to dislike those sensations the most. And the salt areas are on the sides of the tongue.

So where can the sweet area be? Right up front, yo.

What that says is a majority of us like sweet sensations the most, and since cookies are awesome, they hit the spot 99 percent of the time (unless you’re a snickerdoodle, in which case you can bugger off).

Sidebar: You know who loves snickerdoodle cookies? This guy, Erik Horne, NewsOK’s sports web editor:

But I can’t help but forgive the guy for his horrible taste in cookies, because he has great taste in movies.

3. You can take them anywhere

If your parents packed your lunch for you when you were a kid, what dessert did they include? For me, it was a couple of cookies.

And I think it’s because cookies can be taken nearly anywhere. It’s not like my parents could toss a half-pint of ice cream in my He-Man lunchbox and expect everything to end well. Candy was another popular option, but they never did the job like cookies did.

What about road trips? You’re craving something sweet, and you got a couple cookies, and next thing you know, you’re satisfied.

2. They make other desserts better

‘Nuff said.

1. Options like whoa

The best thing about the cookie is there are so many of them out there. Chocolate chip, peanut butter, double chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, mint, M&M, sugar, shortbread, ginger, pumpkin, macadamia nut, and even the dreaded snickerdoodle.

Your options are endless when it comes to cookies. And, when it comes to desserts, options are king.

Do you have a great cookie recipe you just have to share with the world? Submit it during the 12 Days of Cookies contest! The top 12 recipes will win a year’s supply of milk, courtesy of Hiland Dairy.
