Early access on NewsOK and Oklahoman.com -- plus some highlights and low points
Early access for Full Access subscribers
We started something quite different this week. On Tuesday, we launched an initiative to allow subscribers to The Oklahoman early access to some of the stories on NewsOK and Oklahoman.com.
Our publisher Chris Reen explains it in this story and in this video:
Basically, when subscribers connect their subscription to Oklahoman.com and NewsOK.com, they have access to some of these stories before everyone else every day.
As our publisher says:
Ultimately, our goal is to keep NewsOK the most popular, free, advertiser-supported site – while providing special and exclusive value and content to our paid subscribers on Oklahoman.com.
Lillie-Beth Brinkman is always interested in new technology. No, she’s not an engineer or some other technical wizard. She’s a journalist who writes about everyday technology in her Get Appy column each week for NewsOK and The Oklahoman.
This week, she came back from California with an early-adopter set of Google Glass.
She explains it all in this video:
And she wrote about it this week to give our readers a first look at the device that may or may not change how we interact with each other.
NBA Draft Central
Now that the NBA Finals are over, we have a few months before the Thunder opens training camp and begins another attempt to bring a championship to Oklahoma City. But the draft is a less than a week away.
So to get you ready for that, we put together a NBA Draft Central page to highlight our coverage of the draft and give you a preview of the players the Thunder are likely to draft.
A project for the interns
This year’s group of interns at The Oklahoman are working on a pretty cool project to feature people and stories that are unique to some of Oklahoma City’s neighborhoods.
The project is called ‘OKC Neighborhoods,’ focusing on human interest stories within the communities throughout the city.
If you’re looking for some of the feel-good stories that don’t seem to get the attention you wish they received, check out OKC Neighborhoods and take a look at the excellent work from our interns.
Scholar athletes honored
Every year, The Oklahoman’s sports department honors dozens of local students with its annual Scholar-Athletes package in the newspaper on a Sunday and on NewsOK.com.
They were selected from a group of representatives from each school in the Oklahoma City metro area (as defined by The Oklahoman’s circulation department). Winners were selected for each school, and then overall winners were selected from that group.
The 2013 Scholar-Athletes page has all the school winners listed. It also links to previous years, going back to 2009.
We had some technical problems on Wednesday afternoon. That’s not fun, but any managers of large sites will tell you that it’s bound to happen from time to time, especially with such a large volume of content that we distribute every day.
It’s a shame, and some readers noticed.

We were back at full strength after identifying problems that were problematic to our database. You can resume your normal NewsOK-viewing routine.
