The Oklahoma City School Board voted to close Marcus Garvey tonight. Here’s a statement Superintendent Karl Springer just sent out:

Based on the lack of improved academic performance and problematic financial decisions by the Marcus Garvey Leadership Academy administration; the Oklahoma City Public School Board of Education voted 6-2 in favor of ending its charter school partnership. Each OKCPS charter school leadership is given flexibility to create opportunities that promote high academic performance. When comparing other district charter schools and Marcus Garvey Leadership Charter; there is a substantial difference in student performance. The move by this board is in the best interest of the students and district leadership will move forward with placing those students in district schools for the 2013-2014 school year.
