Kyle Thompson has been living in a cave for more than five months.

The MLB Fan Cave, that is.

Last winter, I first wrote about the Edmond resident and his quest to be one of the fans invited to inhabit Major League Baseball’s immersive fan experience. The Fan Cave is a modified space in New York City that’s a cross between a broadcast studio and the TV section at Best Buy. Big leaguers and other baseball types are regulars there, doing interviews for Major League Baseball’s TV channel and website, but even when there are no stars in the house, a massive bank of TVs show live action from around the league.

No wonder Thompson wanted to go there.

At the time, he was one of 50 finalists, a group that had survived from more than 22,000 applicants.

Soon after, he became one of 30.

Then, he became one of nine.

Now, he’s one of three.

Yes, the native Oklahoman has survived all sorts of eliminations that have occurred periodically throughout this season. Those eliminations may or may not be over — Thompson tells me via email that he isn’t for sure — but with baseball’s regular season winding down, you have to think there can’t be many more cuts left.

And I have to tell you, I’m pulling for Thompson. The 24-year-old left his job as the coordinator of student leadership training at the University of Central Oklahoma to move to New York and live in the Fan Cave. He and wife, Kelsi, didn’t know if he’d last a week, a month or the whole summer. They left family. They left friends. They left familiarity. They decided to chase a dream.

It has paid off.

I like it when there are happy endings to stories.

And here’s what’s cool — you can help Thompson in living his dream. Follow him on Twitter at Read his blog at Those sorts of things help Thompson in the eyes of the folks who do the Fan Cave eliminations.

Go, Kyle!
