Photo Stream on NewsOK opens doors to deeper content
We’ve long wished for a good way to expose our collection of photos on NewsOK.com.
We know that photo galleries of sporting events, weather events and other breaking news events drive reader interest. We know that because traffic patterns tell us that. So we make a point to get photo galleries online as soon as we can when these events occur. We want to take you there and show you what we see.
But one thing we’ve never been able to do very well is to showcase the wider variety of photos (and articles) that we have deep in our site. I’m talking about photos and articles from all around the world about a multitude of subjects. We just didn’t have a good page for that.
On Tuesday, we put a new display of photo thumbnails across the top of our web site. It looks something like this.
Click anywhere on that display to go to our Photo Stream presentation on NewsOK.
And yes … that second photo there on the screen shot above is none other than former American Idol Taylor Hicks. That proves how deep our content really goes. We have a recent story deep in our site about Taylor Hicks. Think about that. It might be the lone story written about him in two years.
It’s always changing.
It scrolls for a really long time.
(One of the best things about this page is that it allows me to frequently use the word ‘serendipitous.’)
If you’re familiar with Pinterest, you’ll notice immediately that our columns of large images look similar to to the Pinterest style of browsing content. That social media site’s popularity inspired our editors and developers to solve our problem of having too much good content.
This is the result. It’s “Today’s News Through Pictures From Oklahoma and Around the World.”
Too much content is a good problem to have. And we’re always thinking of ways to help our readers sift through the wealth of information out there.
This week’s attempt at making our site better for our reader? We present the Photo Stream.
