A man accused of punching an Oklahoma City police officer in the face was arrested Saturday night after a struggle and pursuit.

Police said the officer responded about 6 p.m. Saturday to a domestic disturbance call in the 1300 block of SW 20 and met with Uriah Avery Ortiz, 30.

According to the police report, Ortiz appeared to be intoxicated and agreed to have the officer take him to a detox center. When the vehicle approached NW 4 and Virginia Avenue, the officer said Ortiz became violent and tried to open the back door of the patrol car.

Ortiz then began head-butting the window and tried to kick it, police said. The officer pulled over and ran to the back door of his patrol car. Ortiz kicked the door at the sergeant, knocking him backward.

According to the report, Ortiz jumped from the vehicle and punched the officer in the face and began running southbound. The officer pursued Ortiz and used his pepper spray when the man turned around and raised his fists.

After being sprayed, police said Ortiz continued to run and began throwing punches and struggling with the officer. Another officer responded and found the first officer securing Ortiz on the ground.

Ortiz was arrested on complaints of assault and battery on a police officer, obstructing a police officer and public drunkenness. He is being held in the Oklahoma County jail on $6,500 bail.
