A family member of a 7-month-old boy who suffered several bone fractures and a severe tear to a muscle under his tongue has been arrested on a complaint of child abuse.

Officers were called to a hospital Feb. 21 and met with medical staff who said the baby's injuries appeared to be caused by child abuse.

William James Newsome, 20, of Oklahoma City, was booked into the Oklahoma County jail Friday in connection with the boy's injuries.

According to a police report, the infant's mother brought him to the hospital.

She told officials he was having some stomach pain, running a fever and vomiting.

An ultrasound of the child's stomach revealed that the baby's liver appeared to be enlarged, police said.

The woman told staff she also thought her son's right arm was hurting him.

After a full body scan, medical officials said the baby had a broken right shoulder and bilateral fractures in multiple places in both his legs.

The fractures were in various stages of healing.

According to the report, the infant had multiple rib fractures and a lacerated liver.

A doctor told police the liver injury is common with blunt force trauma.

Police said the child has been placed in protective custody.

Newsome is being held at the Oklahoma County jail on $20,000 bail.
